As of 2017-18, 81.1 million people are employed in the tourism sector in India which was 12.38 per cent of total employment in the country. Travel and tourism is the third largest foreign exchange earner for India. During January- November 2018, FEEs from tourism increased 6.40 per cent year-on-year to US$ 25.84 billion. Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) increased by 5.60 per cent year-on-year to 9.37 million in the same period. Foreign tourist arrivals for medical purpose increased from 427,014 in 2016 to 495,056 in 2017(P). During January-November 2018, arrivals through e-tourist visa increased 41.50 per cent year-on-year to 2.06 million.

Fresh Category for Visa released by Government ie M Visa or Medical Visa so medical tourism can expand. To assist Traveller India launched App to assist medical Tourists. The Government of India is working to achieve one per cent share in world's international tourist arrivals by 2020 and two per cent share by 2025.

To boost investments in Tourism sector Government has taken serious efforts by giving 100% FDI permission and 5 year tax holiday for 3 and 4 star hotels around UNESCO sites. FDI received till 2018 June is 1090 crores great boost for Travel and Tourism. India is an enormous market for travel industry. Niche Tourism like Cruises, MICE, Eco, Film, Rural and many other tourism are getting different portfolio . Spiritual tourism is getting hold on domestic and international Tourists.
